Road Runner

By Jeanne Moseley

I've had this Friday morning appointment for a while now, so this morning I'll be out of the house by 6:15 headed for one of the busiest intersections in Ellis County.

Truly, I always dread driving along this stretch of road because it's so congested and fast-paced. Well, that's a comment I made a month or so ago. But that was before my recent trip to Houston.

Back in my previous life, I often traveled. And a quick trip to Houston was nothing to me. I was an old hand at jostling the big city traffic, and there wasn't much that could intimidate me.

Armed only with my rental-car map and a good oldies radio station, I was a woman with a mission and nothing could stop me!

Not so, today. After three days dodging reckless drivers and surviving mile-high freeway ramps, I was more than eager to surrender my map and head north toward home.

Granted, I left behind some of the best shrimp in the state and a plethora of shopping opportunities. All the same, I set my sights on home.

So this morning, as I tackle the intersection of Farm-Market Road 664 and state highway 342 to broadcast my radio show, my most present danger will be the darting Blue Bell Ice Cream truck and the mobile home movers. Sure, the light won't stay green long enough and the Dallas commuters will impatiently ride my bumper as I drive at the speed limit along the county road.

But I think I'm woman enough for that challenge ... any day.
